Saratov Region is situated in the South-East of the East European Plain. The Volga River divides its territory into two parts: western, right-bank part, which is more elevated, and eastern, left-bank part, which is more low-lying. Besides the Volga, the region has 358 other rivers.
Saratov Region is rich in natural resources. It has over 40 minor oil and gas fields, deposits of coal slate, chalk stone and marlstone, a raw-materials base for brick manufacture, primary products for the construction industry, and others.
Saratov Region is an important cultural, historical and educational center of the country. It has 13 theaters, 26 museums, 36 higher education institutions.
The region’s economy is well balanced and differentiated. Saratov is a large industrial center with well-developed power, fuel, petrochemical, engineering, metalworking and woodworking industries. It is also the home to a major air base and to several test ranges.
Industrial output in the region in 2007 amounted to USD7,457. The industrial production index was 107.1%. GRP structure in 2007:
•    Industrial production – 30%;
•    Agriculture, hunting and forestry – 15.4%;
•    Transportation and telecommunications – 15.0%;
•    Construction – 7.6%;
•    Distribution industries – 12.8%;
•    Other types of activity – 19.2%.

The region has a high-capacity transportation system with air transport (airport and permanent air traffic); water transport (with a major port in Saratov) on the Volga, with routes to the Mediterranean, Baltic, and Barents seas; network of pipelines; railway transport (parts of South-Eastern Railways and Volga Railways) and 2 federal highways.
