Sakhalin Region is the only region in the country spread over 59 islands (the largest being Sakhalin, Moneron, Tyuleniy and Kuril Islands). It is surrounded by the Sea of Okhotsk and the Sea of Japan. Most of the Kuril Islands and the Sakhalin coastland are occupied by mountains. It is famous for its 160 volcanoes, 40 of which are active, and high seismic activity. Mineral and thermal water springs are also wide-spread, including waters with balneotherapeutic qualities, and mineral therapeutic muds. 79% of the region's territory are occupied by forests The region has two reserves (Poronaysk Reserve and Kurils Reserve), 12 wildlife sanctuaries, and 50 natural monuments. Sakhalin Region has 2,000 historical and cultural landmarks, 17 museums, and 10 higher education institutions.
The region’s major resource is hydrocarbon fuel that is in high market demand. Sakhalin Region falls under the category of Russian regions that combine outstanding raw materials potential with extreme conditions related to their development. Key industry sectors include: food (fish and seafood), forestry, woodworking, pulp and paper, light, fuel, construction materials, and oil, gas and coal production industries. It also has well-developed cattle breeding, crop raising, and fur farming.
Transportation is one of the leading sectors of the region’s economy. 2 federal highways pass by the region’s territory, as well as 4 gas pipelines and 2 oil pipelines.
It has 11 commercial and fishing seaports (including ice-free ports of Kholmsk and Korsakov), a cargo fleet, international ferry traffic, and the Vanino-Kholmsk railway ferry line. Over 95% of passenger traffic is carried by air (international airport in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk).
