The Primorsky Krai occupies the South Eastern extremity of Russia. It is here that the largest continent of Eurasia meets the world’s largest ocean, the Pacific. The Krai is washed by the waters of the Sea of Japan. The Primorsky Krai is comprised not only of the mainland section, but also many islands. Up to 80% of the krai is covered by forest. The territory of the krai is beneficial for medical treatment and leisure and the krai has two resorts: Sadgorod based on mud deposits and Shmakovsky, on cold, carbonaceous mineral waters.
The krai also has its fair share of the exotic: Primorye is home to the Ussuriisk Tiger, Gingshen, the “root of life” grows here, and the graceful Hua-Lu or “Deer-Flower” inhabits the area. There are unique natural parks and reserves (over 10 in all).
Over 100 coal deposits have been revealed in the region, along with many non-ferrous metal deposits (tin, zinc, lead, copper, bismuth, rare-earth metals, tungsten, silver and gold), and Russia’s largest boron deposit.
The main industry sectors within the Krai are fishing, mining, forestry and timber processing and marine transport.
Over 92% of Russia’s fluorspar is produced in the Krai, 64% of tungsten concentrates, almost 100% of boracic products, 73.6% of lead in concentrate form and 8.4% of refined lead; 18.2% of Russia’s tin is extracted in the Krai.
The prospects of Primorsky Krai are linked with the development of the infrastructure for international communication, in tourism, hotel and congress-exhibition aspects. It is planned to hold the APEC 2012 Summit in Vladivostok, which will promote the growth of the development of the region’s tourism and recreational potential.
Almost all forms of transport are well developed in the region. Marine transport is primary, with 5 major ports, of which Vladivostok is the largest, and several port-terminals.
The entire territory of the Krai, from north to south, crosses the Trans-Siberian highway, the largest of its kind both in Russia and the world.
It is through the ports of Primorye and the Trans-Siberian that the unique container bridge operates from the Asia-Pacific Region to Western Europe.
One federal highway passes through the Krai.
Vladivostok has a principal international airport.
