Kaluga Region is situated in the central part of the East European Plain, between the Central Russian Upland and the Smolensk-Moscow Upland. Its main rivers are: the Oka and the Zhizdra. The region's sub-soil assets include fireclays and high-melting clays, glass-making ingredients, phosphate rock, brown coal, and peat. The region also has a wealth of mineral waters and nonmetallic minerals.
A large number of state natural reserves is located within the region’s territory, including the
Kaluzhskiye Zaseki Reserve, Ugra National Park, Tarusa Wildlife Reserve, and Kaluzhskiy Bor Natural Sanctuary. Besides natural landmarks, Kaluga Region has a number of architectural masterpieces dating back to the 16-19th Centuries (over 30 sites), as well as museums, the most famous of which is the Tsiolkovsky State Museum of the History of Cosmonautics. Kaluga craftsmen are known for hand weaving, embroidery, ceramic toys, pottery, and basket weaving.
Kaluga Region is an important industrial and research center. It has 34 science and research institutions, most of which are situated in the city of Obninsk, where the first Russian science city, or Naukograd, is located. The city also has 28 higher education institutions.
The major sectors of the regional economy are car component and construction materials production, forestry, tourism, agricultural production, and pharmaceuticals.
Kaluga Region is listed among the 20 most developed regions of Russia in terms of density of railroads and highways. The main transportation junctions of the region are Kaluga, Obninsk, and Sukhinichi. Two international highways pass by the region’s territory. The region has two airports, including one of international status.
